San Pedro High School
San Pedro, CA
The new state-of-the-art 1,200-seat gymnasium (21,000sf) contains a regulation basketball court, three volleyball courts, locker rooms, offices, restrooms, fitness room and reception lobby. Designed to assimilate into the school’s historical Art Deco architectural tapestry, the gymnasium was designed as a two-story, split-level building to reduce the building’s footprint, capitalize on the panoramic views of Los Angeles Harbor, and to provide an important connection between the formerly disjointed upper- and lower-campuses. Sustainability/energy efficiency is provided by efficient mechanical systems and northeast facing clerestory windows that provide natural light. The gymnasium was designed in parallel with the modernization of the “old gym” that was built in 1936.
