Using Collaborative for High Performing Schools (CHPS) criteria, the new three-story middle school (170,000sf) was designed to accommodate 1,400 students. Located on a 7.1-acre site in urban South Central Los Angeles, the school features three Small Learning Communities (SLCs) or “schools-within–a-school” that are stacked vertically. Each SLC has a separate identity and focus of study, i.e., Language Arts, Performing Arts and Sciences, and its own classrooms, science labs, administration offices and restrooms. Shared facilities include a library, multi-purpose room, gymnasium, food services, cafeteria, outdoor lunch shelter, central administration office, performing arts classrooms, playfields and outdoor plaza. A subterranean garage provides parking for 117 cars.
