This $39,800,000, 102,000 sq. ft. project converted the vacant East Los Angeles Star Community Hospital into an adult learning center and high school academy. The project was located on a tight 5.05 acre urban parcel in a highly populated area. The first phase of the project implemented a complete building core and shell renovation focusing on structural upgrades and modifications for the 1929 three-story structure. The second phase created 21st Century learning environments to house 600 adult learners and 700 high school students.
The focus of the renovation provides collaboration areas that support multiple modes of learning, technology, flexibility and CHPS integrated design. These spaces include student unions, Small Learning Communities, outdoor learning spaces, independent learning areas and child care support and play areas.
