San Pedro High School’s Historical Art Deco architectural tapestry is prevalent from the moment you enter the campus. Situated on a hill overlooking the Los Angeles Harbor, the school’s breathtaking views are a back-bone to its existing campus and were a driving force behind the new 21,000 sq. ft. gymnasium building.
Designed to complement the school’s historical context, the gymnasium was designed as a two-story, split-level building to reduce the building’s footprint, capitalize on the panoramic views and to provide an important connection between the formerly disjointed upper and lower campuses.
The new building provides a 1,200-seat gymnasium which includes a regulation sized basketball court, locker rooms, fitness room, and support spaces with northeast facing clerestory windows that provide natural daylighting. The gymnasium was designed in parallel with the modernization of the older historic gym building that was originally built in 1936.
Project Highlights: Modernization, Historical Design, Athletic Facilities, CHPS Design, 21st Century Design.
